  • Spackling, really, how to create using spackling compound, found object
(small), various coloring agents. Yes, even using it to create a more 3-dimensional
small painting or brooch. We will provide small canvases for making these items. Wear
your messy clothes in case you decide to paint yourself.
  • Create a small Nuno felted bowl with wool roving. We will talk about
embellishing it on your own after the bowl has dried.
  • Get your Mother's Day cards (or cards in general) made. We will teach several
    ways to create beautiful cards.
  • Cyanotypes are oh so much fun. This technique uses a 2-part solution applied in
the dark to card stock and then foliage or shaped items placed on the card stock and
the sun to create beautiful pieces of art to be framed, put on cards or anything else you
    wish to create.
  • Boiled paper botanicals. Yes, we are going to boil plant life onto watercolor
paper. While it boils, we discover how to prepare your artwork to hang in a gallery? This
is not something that is taught in the art community. Each student may bring 1 piece of
art, and we will discuss how to hang it. Basic hanging and finishing supplies will be
provided during class to finish and hang your artwork. We will go over how to do a
canvas wrap, place wires on the back, and discuss other finishing techniques for fiber
  • Christmas in July! Get ready for the holidays by creating folded fabric
ornaments. I would recommend that students bring a thimble to use, as this is a very
    personal tool.
  • Collage, we will explore using paper, paint, and found small objects to create
small collages. We will talk about composition and using techniques to create a work of
    beauty.
  • Create a small flower arrangement by ruching or folding fabrics on a small
canvas. We will also discuss how to wrap this onto a canvas for hanging.

Artful Techniques Class

Hosted by Kathy Pflaum at the Topeka Art Guild

Techniques abound for all types of art, and the mission of the Topeka Art Guild is to advance artistic techniques across all mediums.

Each month, the Artful Techniques class gives students the opportunity to learn new methods that can be applied to their own artwork. These classes are designed to let you explore and experiment without a large upfront investment—perfect for discovering what techniques truly inspire you.

We kick off the series in February 2026, meeting on the second Saturday of each month.

$55 for each the class as all supplies are provided. Join us for every class or simply choose the ones that spark your interest!

Artful Techniques is all about exploration and having fun
